Hello and welcome! I’m Dr. Guadalupe Cañas-Herrera (Cañas from my father and Herrera from my mother), a Spanish cosmologist currently based in the UK. My research sits at the frontier between theory and observations, using different astronomical observations.
I grew up in Cantabria, was born in Madrid, and my family originates from La Mancha. Alongside my scientific career, I hold a conservatory degree in Music and Piano, and I am a certified active freelancer fitness instructor.
As part of one of the first Spanish generations to fully benefit from European Union education programmes, I have enjoyed an international academic path. I completed a French bilingual secondary diploma, participated in the Comenius and Erasmus programmes, studied Dutch through the (no longer available) Erasmus Intensive Language Courses (EILC), and travelled widely across Europe using the Interrail Pass several times. I have lived in Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, and I am fluent in Spanish, English, Dutch, and French, with a working understanding of German. These experiences have shaped a strong European identity and a firm belief in international cooperation.
Colleagues often describe me as (maybe too) disciplined, organised, and approachable. I take great satisfaction in building structure, fostering collaboration, and bringing people together. In my spare time, I enjoy caring for plants and experimenting with creative home cooking recipes for friends and family.
